World Language Courses

Every student, especially if contemplating college, should take a foreign language course.  Although some colleges do not require a foreign language for admittance, most do. It is generally a good idea to take either two years of two languages or three years of one language to meet the minimum requirements of most colleges. All languages strive to develop a proficiency in comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing as well as an appreciation of culture.

This is an introductory course in French in which the student is introduced to the sounds of the French language. Grammar, reading, writing, and elementary syntax are also stressed. The student will become more aware of the customs, geography, and history of some French-speaking countries.

This course will expose you to the customs, traditions, and history of the various countries that make up our current Spanish-speaking world. Through an assortment of activities, you will explore and learn different aspects of Hispanic culture including history, culture, customs, traditions, art, music and literature of various Spanish-speaking countries. The goal of this course is to provide exposure to the rich array of Hispanic cultures that exist in order to expand your knowledge and perspective about the diverse world in which we live.

This course is designed specifically for heritage speakers of Spanish who already have some oral language proficiency. This course is designed for students with a good foundation of the Spanish language and who would benefit from improving their written and oral communication skills. Through materials selected from the Spanish-speaking world, students will be exposed to various cultural themes. These will help students to expand their knowledge and to start forming and expressing opinions. During the process of improving their abilities in Spanish, students will be assisted and given the necessary tools and grammar practice in order to communicate more clearly. The text used is Encuentros Maravillosos. Students can earn 3 to 6 UConn credits.

This course is for the non-native English speaker. The course focuses on developing students’ oral language abilities and basic literacy skills in English. The learning is content-based focusing on historical figures, geography, and current events.  Students develop oral and written competence in understanding and engaging in academic discourse.
