The Westbrook Board of Education welcomed the school district's new staff members to the district during the BoE meeting on 9/9/2025.
Dear Westbrook Families,
Westbrook Public Schools is committed to the safety of students and community members. As such, beginning Tuesday, September 2, 2025, our morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up traffic pattern will change to improve safety and efficiency.
Important Details:
We will place temporary signage outside the new entrance for the first few weeks to help guide parents through the new arrangement. Any change of this nature has accompanying growing pains that naturally occur as we build new habits. However, this safer traffic pattern will ultimately be more effective, efficient, and reduce frustration for our entire school community.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this transition.
Sincerely,
Matt Talmadge
WHS/WMS Principal

Weekly Update for WMS & WHS
Greetings Westbrook Families,
Happy Friday to you all. Thank you for pausing to read a quick update from Westbrook Middle School and Westbrook High School.
WESTBROOK MIDDLE SCHOOL
Student Council Events
Next week is Spirit Week at the middle school. Students can show their WMS pride creatively. Monday will be Sports Day. Students are encouraged to wear their favorite team's jersey. Tuesday will be Anything But A Water Bottle Day. Students should use their creativity, and bring something novel to hold their water that is NOT your regular bottle. Note: Spray bottles of any kind never go over well on this day. Wednesday will be Wear Pink Day where students can show their support for cancer patients and survivors by wearing pink. Wednesday will also be a fundraiser for the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation. Students are encouraged to bring in a $1 donation in addition to wearing pink. Thursday will be Pajama Day, and Friday will be School Colors Day; 6th graders wear purple, 7th graders wear silver, and 8th graders wear black.
Friday is also WMS Student Council's annual Movie Night. The event will be held between 6pm-8pm on Friday, October 24th. We are asking that students bring a canned good in lieu of a cash donation; all food items will be donated to the local food pantry. We will be watching the movie Coco. Snacks will be provided as well.
Pasta Dinner
Here is a note from Mrs. Selmont about the upcoming Pasta Dinner: It’s Pasta Dinner Time! Please join us on Thursday evening, November 6th, from 5:00-7:00pm for a night of great food, friends, family, and fun! Some of the Westbrook Middle School teachers will be serving pasta, meatballs, salad, bread, and delicious desserts! We are in need of volunteers that afternoon and evening, so be on the lookout for a Sign-Up Genius link. Once again, tickets will be sold for some amazing raffle baskets– a definite highlight for the kids, so raffle basket donations are extremely helpful! Please note that students must be accompanied by an adult. Thank you in advance, and we look forward to seeing you on November 6th! See this flyer for more information.
Mountain Workshop
Our friends from Mountain Workshop will be joining us next Tuesday. They will be putting the entire school through some fun, challenging team-building activities designed to develop the skills and attributes needed to make growth on the Portrait of a Graduate continuum. But, students cannot participate in Mountain Workshop if they do not deliver a permission slip! If your child has not approached you to sign one of these, contact the office, and we’ll send you an electronic copy.

WESTBROOK HIGH SCHOOL
Rock of Ages
Get ready to rock! Westbrook High School proudly presents Rock of Ages, November 20-22. This electrifying 80's jukebox musical features the power ballads and anthems we grew up with—the songs that shaped our youth and still make us turn up the volume. Mark your calendars now to watch our talented students bring this nostalgic journey to life. Some classic melodies have been permeating the hallways of WHS lately. You won’t want to miss this walk — I mean rock down memory lane (that was bad. I am aware of it. I do apologize.).
PSAT Administration and Digital Readiness Check
Students in grades 9 - 11 will be taking the PSAT on October 23. Ninth graders will take the PSAT 8/9 assessment while tenth and eleventh graders will sit for the standard PSAT. The PSAT is a practice test that prepares students for the SAT by mirroring its format and content. It serves multiple purposes: it helps identify academic strengths and challenges, connects students with colleges and scholarship opportunities through College Board's BigFuture program, and—crucially for juniors—serves as the qualifier for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. Taking the PSAT gives students valuable test-taking experience while opening doors to recognition and financial aid for college.
Students will be doing a Digital Readiness Check for PSAT on October 22. It is imperative that they come in with their fully charged, school-issued Chromebooks on 10/22 and 10/23.
Seniors will be engaged in a “Linked In” seminar during the aforementioned testing time for grades 9-11. Leslie Carson will continue to make the school to career/post-high school “link” with our seniors who, believe it or not, will be leaving the public school system in just eight months!
Shoreline Music Festival
19 musicians were nominated to be members of the Shoreline Music Festival. The Shoreline Music Festival is an honors ensemble composed of advanced HS music students from the 12 Shoreline Conference schools. Selected students participated in two rehearsals and a concert this past week.
Congratulations to the following student musicians for representing both the school and town with musical class.

WESTBROOK SCHOOL COMMUNITY: LOOKING AHEAD
Conferences
Parent/teacher conferences provide an invaluable opportunity to connect with your child's teachers, discuss academic progress, and build partnerships that support student success. Westbrook Middle School conferences will be held from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on both October 21 and October 23, while Westbrook High School conferences will take place from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM on October 23 only. Please visit this Conferences link for scheduling information and additional details. Note: The linked document contains tabs. Access WMS or WHS by using the tabs feature on the left. Conference sign-ups end on Sunday at noon, so book that conference! If you schedule a virtual conference, Google Meet links will be sent out to you by 3 PM on Monday, October 20. We look forward to meeting with you.
School Safety
On Thursday, we successfully conducted a lockdown drill at both Westbrook Middle School and Westbrook High School. These practice drills are essential for ensuring our students and staff know how to respond safely, calmly and efficiently during an emergency.
During this drill we were able to test our emergency notification system. The system is operational, and the proper authorities received our signal. Additionally, we were fortunate to have emergency response officials on-site who provided valuable feedback. Their insights will help us refine our procedures and enhance our preparedness. Thank you to our entire school community for taking these drills seriously and prioritizing safety.
Support, Spirit & Pride
Thank you to all staff and students who supported the Tommy Fund for childhood cancer during our Hats for Hope day last week. Interact did a nice job organizing this, and we were able to raise considerable funds PreK-12 for this important cause.
Interact’s Volleyball Tournament on November 3 promises to showcase student talent and school spirit in a fun, competitive atmosphere. Students must donate 10 canned goods or pay the $10 entry fee to compete, but the only rule is to have fun.
On November 11, we will honor our local veterans with a special breakfast at WHS and by hosting a ceremony on the green recognizing their service and sacrifice. Nikki Esposito and her broadcast team create a marvelous Veterans Day video that celebrates our WPS military family. Please click this Veterans Day link if you would like to be added or add someone to the video tribute.
Halloween
Halloween is just a few weeks off. I know that a few of my children are beginning to hatch a costume plan for the big day at school and for trick-or-treating that evening. Halloween is on a Friday this year, and students will be allowed to dress up at school. Students are encouraged to have fun dressing up, but they need to keep it appropriate. Students who choose to come in costume must be identifiable at all times and be dressed respectfully. Full masks, face paint that obscures identity or wearing anything that marginalizes or offends an individual or a group is not acceptable. Please encourage them to dress in a manner that is both safe and respectful as they prepare for All Hallow’ Eve at WMS and WHS.
